An independent guide to oral health. This is not a dental clinic website, it does not book appointments and it does not replace an examination by a dentist. For severe pain, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, call 112 or 103 (in Russia; 112 also works across the EU).

Sources and limitations

This page explains what the specific facts in this guide are based on, why many topics are described without figures and where the site's capabilities end. It will help you understand what you can rely on here and which questions only a dentist can answer.

This site cannot see your teeth. So we say honestly where a general rule ends and your dentist's decision begins.

— Editor's note

How we choose sources

We take figures on how common oral diseases are from the WHO Global Oral Health Status Report 2022, and sugar recommendations from the WHO guideline on sugars intake. General care advice is checked against the FDI World Dental Federation's patient information, and patients' rights in Russia against Federal Law No. 323-FZ.

Where there is no reliable source on a question, we stick to general wording or leave the topic out altogether. We do not invent studies or statistics, we do not state how long fillings or implants last and we do not repeat advertising copy.

The scope of care under Russia's OMS insurance, how to access it and the conditions at clinics vary, and health systems in other countries work differently. In such places we suggest checking the details with your clinic or insurer.

Main sources

  • WHO — Global Oral Health Status Report (2022)
  • WHO — Guideline on sugars intake for adults and children
  • FDI World Dental Federation — patient information
  • Federal Law No. 323-FZ of 21 November 2011 “On the Fundamentals of Health Protection of Citizens in the Russian Federation”

Limitations of this guide

Aspekt is not a dental clinic website and has no connection to the organisation that previously used this domain. We do not book appointments or publish prices, addresses, dentists' names or reviews.

We do not diagnose, prescribe treatment or medicines, recommend "treating yourself at home" or name brands of toothpaste, brushes, mouthwash or clinics. Everything here applies to people in general and may not fit your case.

The Ask your dentist section offers prompts for a conversation with your own dentist; it is not a consultation. With severe pain, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing or swallowing, do not waste time searching online: call 112 or 103 in Russia straight away, or your local emergency number elsewhere (112 across the EU).

  • Research

Types of studies and how to read "clinically proven" claims on dental-care packaging.

  • Ask your dentist

Questions worth asking your dentist at a check-up, before treatment and afterwards.

  • Home

A guide to oral health: daily care, sugar, visiting a dentist, children's teeth and miracle-product advertising.

Oral-care recommendations, the scope of dental care covered by Russia's compulsory medical insurance (OMS) and the rules for medical paperwork may change.
